‘Wanted’ shoots a controversy

It’s all about guns and glamour. The ad for the DVD version of Universal Pictures' 2008 action flick "Wanted" has courted a controversy. The Advertising Standards Authority ( ASI) in Britain insists that the ad showing actress Angelina Jolie firing weapons must not be shown because it could be seen as condoning gun violence.

The ad shows Jolie and co-star James McAvoy pointing their guns and firing in the direction of the viewer.

The authority says the ad glorifies or glamorizes the use of guns. Though the advertising authority has no power to enforce its writ, it can refer advertisers to Britain's Office of Fair Trading for legal action.

However, studio Universal is not amused. It says that "some people did not like to see a woman in a strong lead role". It points out that Wanted's characters live in a fantasy world which was easily distinguishable from reality.
